|
|
Project started july 1st, with buying the parts bike:
Then decided to attack the engine:
Got almost everything going, even new plated jugs, and stuff...
Engine is now ready to bolt on...
Tank was stripped too:
Had the rad cleaned, and spent about 5 hours placing the fins back...
Got the exhaust collectors done, (even the original ATAC's, but still missing 4-5 parts on them...)
The Marvic's were stripped & powder coated, and fitted with new bearings
Got new swing arm bearings & seals, steering stem bearings (1 had to be custom ground from a standard: 26mm I.D. ) & seals
Frame & swing arm, and triples, are presently being sanded / buffed, for polishing...
The good expansion chambers have gotten brushed down, and will get bead blasted, before getting a coat of refractory powder coating black hammered finish
New 18'' slicks (THANKS TO SCOTT REAVIS!!!) have been mounted on the originals 18's
Forks are apart, and bottoms are out to get powder coated black like Fast Freddie's 85...
It will have the 85 replica bodywork;
1 original Honda, that will get more attention, and 1 set of Airtech's that will be on the bike during track events...
The 18'' wheels & original Honda's fairings will be for parade / show
I will soon post up pics of polished frame, _________________

Don, not in such of a hurry
Just want to have the bike ready for VRRA (Canada...) by mid-summer: I still nedd to get my licence, but track days will be good enough at first.
I will need to iron out the bugs / start understanding set-up, and machine, as I am used to a 502lbs early 90's W/C GSXR...
As for the pace, I started in july... I'm just getting some of the stuff done... The results are in the preperation, and the prepping started then...
I went and picked up one of my sets of pipes at the powder coating facility this morning:

I know its not too much progress to show, but I have been doing behind the scene chores: Met with about 6 different body / paint shop, in order to bring back the original fairings to what they should look like... Finally met with the proper guy, with the same vision, and attention to detail, without my wallet screaming for mercy...
Also, getting all the original 85 Freddie sponser's logos, and sizing, and colour matching... etc...
Took the forks appart, and brought my tubes to be powder caoted the same color as the ones on Freddie's bike... Should have them in the triples by this week end...
The only thing done to the bike was fitting on the triples: I had to make my own seals for the bearings: I actually took some O rings for the top bearing, and modified a standard one for the bottom bearing...
The 2 nuts under the top triple, were powder coated ''steel plating'' colour... Should last a lot longer than original plating...
Keep you guys posted soon...

Hi Fred,
Your bike is looking great! YES, I can appreciate the "behind the scene chores". It's always the "details" which make the difference.
I've taken a few days off from the frame polishing (to let the fingers heal a bit ) and have spent the past 3 days working on details (mostly dealing with the swing arm pivot (bearings, bushings, etc.) and the components related to the rear axle (chain pulls and such).
I work a few hours everyday on my project, but I can't keep up with you a Rene.
Please keep posting those pictures (when you get a chance) and inform us of ALL THOSE DETAILS.

What wheels are standard on the 85 RS250 ??
Rene |
I have two sets for the bike: 17 Marvic's & the original 18'' DID's
The DID flat steel spoke type are the original ones, and the ones I got with the RS, are is very good condition, and even retain their original paint job...
These DID's are the same ones as Freddie Spencer's 1985 RS250 #19

I went to my friend Gianni, at MotoGP Canada (suspension specialist) to get my forks & rear shock back...
Well: Wanted to powder coat my lowers to match Freddie Spencer's 250GP winning bike, and did so:
Gianni is very meticulous & a good guy...
So seals being obsolete, stried to get his ''master hands'' to give the least damageable servicing...
All went well after I borught him the powder coated cylinders & top spanner nuts... Untill I went to his shop and picked them up...
Although him taking the time and effort to be carefull on these ''old'' seals, they actually let some of the 5 weight out...
Now me & Gianni, are on a quest to try to find some alternative to get some seals, or even get something close that is readily available, that might even require some retrofitting & machining...
If anyone has some, or could lead me in the right direction, I would appreciate, but I can understand if no one does...
Regards
