|
|
DM: From the old campaign...
| Quote: | Ten years later, and the second Darkstar War still had lingering effects on the land of Sundara. The world was a much darker place now, as if that was possible what with all of the pre-existing racial and religious tension that had plagued the land for eons.
The ancient evil had been defeated once again, if just barely at that. The humans, led on by Sol Jonas Bradford himself, had formed a shaky alliance with the Dwarves and Elves they had long-ago cast out, in a joint effort to save their world from doom and destruction. A group of adventurers had joined in the battle, and their aid proved invaluable in the victory over evil. They brought with them a Darkling, Arunyia Darkstar - a refugee, a rare one indeed, as he wasn't evil like his brethren. He wasn't exactly welcomed, as would be expected, but he managed to deactivate the Obelisk from inside, greatly reducing the Ancient Evil's power. Whether he survived is unknown. Avaraxus' armies still tried to take the Obelisk anyways, for the power it would grant in reshaping the world, but they suddenly vanished, never to be seen again. Jakob, a psion from another dimension, and friend to the adventurers, had returned to intervene. The only known thing to ever come from another plane and promptly leave Sundara, as it is known to be a closed plane, Jakob was destroyed in doing so - the ultimate sacrifice, all for his friends.
It was to be an age of peace, but it would not last.
Sol Jonas Bradford was unhappy with his religion's own bigoted views, and tried to amend them. Non-humans were considered inferior, as were homosexuals and worshipers of other deities. He wanted Mornay's messaeg of peace and lvoe to extend beyond her own human followers, and with great effort, began to make progress in reform. The human Council would have nothing of this. Although it is not actually known to be true, almost everybody believes that the Council was behind the plot to assassinate the Sol. Archmagus Lucian's and Lord Faradin's distaste for peace seemed to strengthen that belief. Along with the Sol, his daughter Ariel, their close friend Ishkar, and many of his followers also died. Darius the Silver-haired, the famed demon hunter and sworn protector of the Sol, took it personally, as he had been searching for his half-sister during this time and wasn't there to at least die with his best friend and lord. He was never seen again. There was a month of slight chaos in the absence of someone suitable to replace Jonas Bradford as the next Sol, Farlaen being a theocratic kingdom with certain "democratic" leanings - the Council was trying to find someone they could work through, unlike the stubborn, kind-hearted Jonas. But the return of the long-absent high bishop Jeremiah Bradford, Jonas' father, would end the chaos. He would replace his son and undo the "damage" he had done.
Sol Jeremiah Bradford made it brutally clear that there would be an end to the new Order, and that the old wways would return. He ordered all non-humans be returned to their second-class-citizen status, the nightfall curfew once again in effect. All Darklings, Tieflings, and Half-Elves that could be found were either exiled, incarcerated, or executed, but at least they got a trial - granted, a completely one-sided one that was a mockery of justice, but a trial nonetheless. The homosexuals that were found were flat-out murdered in the streets. Next, on a quest of pure vengeance, the lizard people living in the deserts to the south were genocidally hunted to the point of near-extinction. This was, of course, due to the now-high chieftain Sssarlax's murder of the new Sol's young daughter nearly fifty years earlier.
War was declared on the Grey Elves next, the last of the Elves left on Sundara. Where the goblinoids and humans had failed before in their attempts, the new Sol would surely succeed now - there weren't enough Elves to fight the human armies forever. Kae'ris, one of the last true Elven cities left, having been destroyed by the goblinoid forces just before the start of the second Darkstar War didn't help. The goblinoids still wanted to destroy the Elves, but the Sol also declared war on them simultaneously for meddling in the affairs of their "superiors." Thus, a three-party war was currently ravaging the East.
Most of the human cities went from being prime examples of how a society can change for the better to being exactly what they had been for eons before - monuments of bigotry and hatred in "unity." The only human city, actually a small town, that did not change back to the old, hateful ways was Oldenton. On the border between the great western forest and the Darujos, which was once the land of the High Elves before their extinction centuries earlier, it remained a multicultural and accepting place. The town quickly grew in size to a very culturally-diverse city, what with so many unwanteds realizing it was a bastion for their kind and deciding to stay there. Granted, it was nowhere near the size of Farlaen, but it was quite impressive how quickly it had grown.
The Dwarves were disgusted with all of this, and shut themselves in their mountain strongholds once again. The Sol's patrols could never find a way into the grand homes of the Dwarves, so they instead were simply left to themselves while other wars were being waged. They could always be dealt with later.
The Ul'Dranim lived too far into the northern volcanic wasteland to be dealt with properly, so they as well would have to wait to be slaughtered.
In a matter of only a decade, the world had gone straight to hell in a handbasket. And it only got stranger...
The moon had gotten closer to Sundara for some reason. A spell of concealment had been lifted, and now it could be seen for what it truly was: a verdant land of greens and blues, inhabitable and life-supporting in all obviousness. But it was unreachable. The Council started many projects to try and reach it, but all failed. There seemed to be a magical barrier protecting it from any intrusion. |

~South Seas, roughly seven days sail from the city of Farlaen~
“She’s going!”
Cougar’s voice was barely audible over the choking churn of the southerly winds as the rigger listed violently in the violent seas. Ropes strained and the boat listed in the turbulent waters, threatening to hurl the party overboard. For weeks since their induction into the thieves’ guild, the Cat’s Eye, the group had been sailing south for a delivery mission to Farlaen. Talsina, Shan and Verzera in particular, had been cynical throughout the journey, especially after their close encounters with Sol Jeremiah’s death squads. They now clung onto the wet railings of the rigger, barely holding on as the waves pounded the boat again.
Suddenly, there came a cracking as the mast splintered in the winds. Streos, who had recently joined the guild as hired muscle, leapt onto the icy decks to avoid being crushed by the thick wooden pole. He was fortunate for seconds later, another wave washed onto the cavity of the hull, washing personal belongings, wares and a few inexperienced deckhands into the seas. He clung onto a piece of flotsam, watching helplessly as his companions were left to the mercy of the waves.
It was too much for the rigger to handle. The battered ship finally splintered into no fewer than a dozen pieces which floated away into the mountainous grey seas. Those who made it latched onto anything they could, paddling vigorously against the pull of the unrelenting deep. The last sensations the beleaguered party experienced were their wet clothes and armour dragging them down while salty water filled their gaping lungs... _________________ Unique Outsider

~Talsina, Streos, Koazure, Verzera~
The scent of dried salt, the crying of waves breaking onto the sea's edge and the sensation of a mutant sun beating on their sand-speckled clothing and hair. One by one, they were jolted from their watery nightmares, hacking up the liquid from their drowned lungs as they dragged themselves from the waves. One by one, they came to notice the alien landscape around them. A wide stretch of beach, littered by their rigger's wreckage panned out before them before disappearing under a verdant blanket of smothering green. The raucous shrieks of tropical birds and a distinctive... heaviness in the air told them they were far from their planned destination. _________________ Unique Outsider

~Shan~
"Get up, lazy! Up! Up!" Belian's voice echoed in Shan's mind through the empathic link he shared with his familiar. Groggily, he awakened, blinking away the granules of sand and salt that speckled his clothing and hair. The warm, sticky that seemed to consume his body wasn't helped by his sodden clothes and the tropical sun that beat down upon his form. He wiped away the sweat gathering on his brows and glanced around. He was on a stretch of beach which went on to the horizons, the monotony of the white sands broken by the fragments of wood and wreckage from their ship. As far as he could see, there didn't appear to be anybody else in sight, either on the beach or among the lush trees that sprung up behind the dunes. To his chaotic, passionate self, it seemed that he was truly alone. _________________ Unique Outsider

STREOS
Streos got up groggily, reeling from the reddish haze the sun's light produced upon his eyes. He knew it was a result of having them closed for too long, only to experience illuminative shock - but he couldn't rightly care less. It wasn't important. His body didn't hurt much, so he gathered that either he healed very quickly, or he has been lying there among the wreckage for all too long - he was alive, this was important.
He scanned the beach, taking in its alien feel, he breathed the hot, humid, salty air. The haze shrouding his sight was already lifting, he did a mental inventory of his gear. He still had the magic belt and chainshirt - the latter only because he couldn't get rid of it soon enough before he lost consciousness. Ring? Check. Two small flasks hanging from his belt - miraculously unharmed. Reaching inside his armour, he noted with relief that the enchanted wafers were still there - no doubt soaked and furthermore tasting like seawater, but they might retain their healing properties. His gauntlets were, of course, still with him - he was still wearing them, recalling how he ripped wood to splinters trying to hold on to floatsam.
He looked around again - this time with a different filter, noticing there were other people washed up with him on the beach. Some might be dead, but it wasn't impossible.
Streos turned on his heel, and walked in silence towards the nearest survivor - to give them a prod with the boot, in order to check whether they still weren't dead. _________________

Shan slowly opened his crusted eyes to the tropical sun. His lips and throat moved as he began to speak, but then a desperate expression crossed his face. He reared up, Belian flapping his brown leathery wings in supprise as he dodged the spray of seawater and grit. after a few minutes of coughing, He collapsed back onto the sand, breathing heavily.
Hmmm. what would be the best first words to say in this situation? ah...
Well, Shit.
Shan's life was very funny, provided you werent Shan. Days on end of sailing without Shan ever feeling so much as queasey, and now within his first few seconds of consciousness on land, he felt as if he had been on the piss all week.
Shan flicked his fingers and muttered a few sylables, then stood up. he straigtened his sodden clothes, which quickly became less sodden and gritty with salt and sweat.
Shan Casts Presdigitation.
Belian fluttered up to his accustomed place, clinging to shan's shoulder. The pair surveyed their surroundings. The wrechage of the ship was strewn everywhere, but there seemed to be no more survivors.
The jungle seemed strangely alluring to Shan. he had sledom seen more trees in one place in his entire life, and despite his isolation from everything familiar, he felt...comforted by the sight of them. the jungle didnt seem foreboding or to be hiding dangers or secrets. It seemed...welcoming?
He shook his head. Now wasnt the time to think about that. Now was the time to be practical.
You know, sometimes I think we're cursed, Belian. It seems like everyone we meet comes to a nasty end.
Dont say that. we dont know they're dead. we survived. they might have as well-
spare me, Belian. This isnt a Story. its real life. People dont usualy survive shipwrecks in storm-tossed waters. they drown or die of exposure, sahuaguin, or sharks. we're just an exception. Ok, Ok, yes its possible someone else survived, but theres no point in assuming they did or acting as if they might.
The two thoughfully watch the waves. Belian remains pointedly silent.
Fine. I'll Look. But only for a hour or two. Happy now?
The pair trudges off down the shore, the sand making whispering noises below the tread of Shan's heavy boots. _________________ We bear witness to the bright eternity of the Nihilanth's demise. You leap, you fall, we see you flash beyond the barriers

Talnsia
Talnsia's battered body twitches a few seconds before she hears a loud yelling. Wake up!.....Wake up!!!! WAKE UP YOU STUPID DAMNDABLE WOMAN!! DO NOT MAKE ME DRAW EVERY SCAVANGING BIRD AROUND HERE TO PECK YOUR f**k EYES OUT!! Talnsia slowly sits upwards stretching out her sore arms. Why do you always have to be so loud when you wake me up? Becuase if I don't you WOULDN'T WAKE UP!!! Talnsia scans the beach for a few seconds taking in this exotic new world. Have you ever been in a place like this before? Never. Talnsia checks what made it through the storm. My weapons are all here... My armor.. I'm supprised it diddn't drag me under and kill me... Still have arrows... I can still hunt at least.. Talnsia looks across the beach for someone who is still alive. Do you see anyone? I see several. I see some... Dark skinned elf thing to your right. Well at least your eyesight is better than mine.. Talnsia rushes over to Verzera dodging the planks of wood on the way. Once she gets there Talnsia begins nudging Verzera. _________________ <BEEP>

Streos finds himself staring at the still form of Koazure. He gives the 'corpse' a light kick, even as he notices Talnsia and Verzera. _________________

Koazure's eyes open all to suddenly and the sunlight seems magnified a hundred fold so that he has to close them again. A light kick to his ribs opens them again, to see Streos standing over him. Everything seems upside down for a second and then his senses kick back in, letting him grogilly stand up in the wreckage of the ship. His glasses somehow lay just a few feet away and he picks them up, wiping of the grainy sand of the beach with his soaked shirt. "So, Streos, good morning." The warlock says in a voice of detest for his current situatuion. He shook his head, letting sand and water scatter out of his hair. He finds his backpack near and opens it, looking inside to see that his items miraculously are still in shape, though his books look near ruined. A moan of personal torment escapes his mouth as he looks at the wet books. He almost smiled to see that he still held ownership over the his favourite keep sake, a mace with a broken handle. Koazure popped the mace out of his pack, flipping it once or twice in the air. Looking back at Streos he asks if the others are awake, or if they are known dead. He seems a little oblivious to the island around him. _________________ Take it easy. |

STREOS
"The Drow and Tieflin' are, yeah," Streos points at the two moving figures in the distance. "That's them, me, and you. Four," he spits on the sand.
"HEY!" he roars at the tops of his voice, in the direction of the other two, and waves. _________________

"Mmmhh." Koazure incoherintly mumbles and waits for the others to arive. " Well a lot of us must have died in the crash, pitty." he commented dryly. His eyes scan over the beach for anything else.
DM: Not an island, but a vast stretch of beach. Koazure doesn't know if he's on an island or not. -Arz _________________ Take it easy.

DM: 500 XP for all.
~Verzera~
"Urgh, Calthie..." Verzera groaned as felt herself being lifted by a pair of hands, the moist sand still clinging to her armour and skin. Reluctantly, she pulled herself from the waves into a sitting position, resting in the frothy backwash. By the hells! Barely a week into this thieve's guild and already stranded high and dry on some beach far away from home. She wondered if they'd ever actually stop and have a nice rest for once. It was all that thrice-damned Sophiea woman's fault. If they hadn't followed her, they might still be in the relative comfort of Oldentown, enjoying a warm bed and sheets. "Calthie, you'd better..."
She stopped and looked up. It was not the woman she had loved. Normally, Verzera would have blushed and turned a deeper shade of purple but this was hardly the time for moping about. She wanted her lover to reassure her that everything would be all right.
"Where is she Talsina? The others?" _________________ Unique Outsider

~Sophiea~
"Sophiea! Sophiea!" The war veteran heard Calthera's faint voice in her ears and sensed the elven librarian's arms gently rousing her into consciousness. Slowly, she opened her eyes to see her friend's concerned face staring back, the elf's thin lips quivering with concern. "You're awake, thank Sargea! How are you feeling?" As Sophiea gathered her breath, she noticed Calthera's bedraggled appearance. The librarian's mahogany auburn hair, usually straight and well cared for, was crusted in a layer of sand and dried salt and her blue gown was sodden, with bits of kelp hanging off the satin. Calthera's cheeks were streaked with swathes of raw red and she sniffled.
"I... I think we're the only ones here," She whispered, brushing a patch of sand from her dress. "We have to find the others..."
~Shan~
Shan's legs laboured him along the desolate stretch of beach in his futile search for others. The sinking white sands ate up his feet every time he took a step and he found it difficult to see in the glare cast by the relentless sun.

((I have assumed we are a goodly distance away. One that would make shouting quite justified.))
STREOS
Streos hears the tiefling shout something about dark elves, which would seem to be correct. What she says afterwards, quieter, he does not hear. _________________

She was a mess. Tired, sore, and completely worn out. The last thing that she remembered was sitting in a dank room inside of a boat, trying not to let the sea-sickness win. Suddenly, she was on a beach, with a half lung full of water. Sitting up, she manages to keep from blacking out as the blood rushes to her head. Getting to her feet, she takes a look around. She was still clad in her armor, and her weapon was firmly attached to her back. After judging that there were no immediate threats, she turned back to the elf. “Thank you. Are you hurt?” _________________ Pain heals,

~Shan~
"Blessed Jagon... why?" The feeble voice carried over the washing of the tides and Shan turned to see a haggard figure limply crawling from the foamy backwash. The waif of a man still wore a sodden sailor's shirt and beeches and he sprawled himself out on the beach, exhausted by his ordeals. "Curse you Jagon..." He panted, "Curse you..."
~Sophiea and Calthera~
Calthera lifted herself and patted down her dress, removing the sand and kelp from the light satin. "I'm fine thanks," She said, forcing a smile on her face. "Really. I hope the others are fine though. Damn, I want Verzera with us right now" She clung onto her leather journal, its pages miraculously dry and unbent from the water, something which couldn't be said for the remaining contents of her pack. Her quills and inks had leaked through to her spare blouses and she didn't want to know what happened to her parchments and scrolls.
~Verzera, Talsina, Streos, Koazure~
The Tuh'raan princess stood up, the salty water still dripping from her cloak and hair. She tried walking over to the others but instead fell to her knees, vomitting the remains of her last meal. Still tasting the bile in her mouth, she wiped her mouth and tried standing again, wobbling on her feet. "Last time I'm sailing. Ever." She complained. "But dammit, has anybody seen Calthie?"
Streos could see the beach stretching along into the horizon, the white sands only broken by the occassional piece of driftwood, dried kelp and pieces of their ship's wreckage. Hundred metres inland though, a verdant jungle started sprouting into place, the trees eventually sprawling into a vast rainforest that went as the eyes could see. The raucuous cries of tropical birds and animals was only matched by the lulling movements of the waves as it swept at the sunbaked shore. _________________ Unique Outsider

Koazure nodded and followed Streos to the princess and the Tiefling. He spit out any remaining sand in his mouth, an arid dryness slowly creeping into his neck. " So I guess the others must be dead, or lost somewhere else..." He took in a breath that cut his dry throat and looked back at the jungle. " Maybe they're in the jungle?" _________________ Take it easy. |

STREOS
"They won't be, if they have any sense," replied Streos, voicing his oppinion. "We don' know what the hell is in that mess of trees and shrubs and suchlikes. I've travelled a bit 'round Sundara, an' I've seen nothing like it. But trust you me - the hotter it is, the nastier the vermin. And it's pretty darn hot here," he punctuated that thought by wiping his forehead. _________________

Talnsia
I don't think she is here with us. HAHA! She is probably dead like the rest! Whaat? Was she yo. Talnsia grabs the amulet and throws it straight into the fine sand. Damn it.. Don't you ever think of anyone elses feelings for once? Nope. Talnsia smothers the amulet into her pack after shaking the sand off it. P-please forgive him. Talnsia does a slight bow. He doesn't know what he does sometimes. _________________ <BEEP> |
