Hold-over is where the crosshair is held higher than the point of impact, usually reserved for times where you need to take a very long shot with a scope and rifle that are sighted in at a shorter distance. Hold-under is used where you have a point of aim that would have the point of impact hit below your point of aim. An example of that is where you have a high power rifle and have set it up for short range target use and you want to have it hit a point of aim beyond your short range sight-in distance. An example would be a rifle sighted in at 25 yards and you want to aim for point of impact at 50 yards. Normally, your rifle would shot high at 50, so you would take a point of aim that is lower than your point of impact to have the two meet. One last example is where you are shooting at a high angle, either up or down. When you range find the target, is is actual distance, but when you look at the distance the pellet travels forward, it is much closer. Your crosshair will be held low on the target provided you set the turret for the distance to the target, rather than the distance to the point on the ground, under your intended target.

Appreciate the response Don...
I remember shooting spot on all day long with my D24, then I ran into a situation where the target I was shooting was down a rather steep hill.... It took me a while to figure out what was going on and was truly amazed at how much hold-under it took to finally nail that target constantly.... Embarassed
