Hi Triple Triple -

I was happy to see this post and wanted to thank you for taking the time to share the job. I'm hoping you may be able to send additional video as the pipes are assembled.

I've thought about trying this project myself, but I don't own a TIG set up yet. I was wondering what sort of equipment you are using to fab the pipes (rollers, shear, welder, etc.) and was also wondering if you are working in mild steel or stainless (a bit hard to tell from the photos)?

I'd also like to know a bit more about the challenges of getting everything assembled without too much distortion. I notice you tacking the pieces - I'd love to see video that show a bit more how the continuous welds are done to avoid distorting the cones.

Anyway, thanks for the post. If any others would like to share their experience building pipes, I'd be most interested. I did see some 3 D development drawings that another lister posted. I was wondering if you might be working together on this project?

Bob

hey bob
the name of the slip roll is long wore off.the tig is a miller lift arc.All the pieces are laser cut for the utmost in acuracy and i have custom made solid steel cones for all the various angles i use to make each piece perfectly round. as for the metal warping it is none exsistant. if your getting it to warp your using to much heat. I'm welding mild steel. as for the 3D drawings they are from my good friend walms he does all the layout work and routing. i roll them, fit and weld.

You answered my next question; how you cut the pieces out. Thanks

Don (not Henry) Smile

Thanks for the info. I was guessing there might be a laser involved Very Happy

I'm trying to visualize the cones you mentioned - do you hand wrap the cone sheetmetal around a solid pattern? If this is the case, are you making a new solid every time you need a different cone section??

I've been taking TIG welding at my local Junior College - dreaming of an inverter TIG. I have an oxyacetylene rig and I've done some gas welding repair on old RS125 pipes - but still very interested in learning the best approach. Also wondering if stainless might be a better long term solution (not sure I can afford Titanium yet Laughing Laughing ). What guage steel are you using??

Thanks, and keep posting on this subject.

Bob

i roll the cones tack them up and then use the solid cone to make them perfectly round. .035" is the thickness i'm using. i've welded stainless aircraft exhaust and repaired more cracks then i care to talk about so i am staying away from the stuff.
