So on Friday my free screener DVD of "Kisses and Caroms" arrived. Yes, that's right. My. Free. Screener. DVD. How cool is that? I haven't watched it yet, but I plan to tonight or later this week.
"What is this film?" I hear you ask, "and why are you getting a free screener?"
The answer is simple. "Kisses and Caroms" is the debut feature film by indie up'n'comer Vince Rocca. According to the back of the DVD, a girl arranges a threesome to show her ex-boyfriend she is his dream girl, but blinded by his p*n*s, he believes their relationship is best left alone. Through the antics of offbeat characters at a billiard pro shop, he realizes all his fantasies in her, but is it too late?
The film comes with high praise from film-maker Kevin Smith: "Kisses and Caroms is as assured a first film as I've ever seen. Crackling with strong performances, this sexy little day-in-the-lifer is worth your time."
Seeming a cross between "Clerks" and "American Pie", at 81 minutes this indie comedy looks highly amusing, and very good things could well be coming to Vince Rocca.
If you want your very own free screener copy sent directly to your house from across the pond at no expense to you, visit this site and fill out the form:

"Blinded by his p*n*s"? Is this a technical term, Sam? I know accidents can happen in the throes of desire, but that's just sick. _________________ Moore Than This - Treading the line between absurd and ... sightly less absurd. |

I just watched this film finally after weeks of it sitting on my desk, and I'm very glad I did. At a lean 81 minutes this should have just flown by, but it felt a lot longer.. in a good way. Great characters, decent acting, some hilarious moments. This is definitely not a flick to watch with your parents (lines like "Well, caress my clit with sandpaper!" and "f**k you, you vaginal blood leak!" [probably paraphrased but still] spring to mind..).
The two leading ladies are funny, sexy and engaging, although Nicole Rayburn as Tera gave a slightly better performance; she nailed the character perfectly.
All three male leads were hilarious. The Eddie character had me chuckling on pretty much every single line he said, the guy who played David was very funny ("Power of Heff") and the main lead, Zack, was like Dante Hicks for this generation.
The film's only flaws lay in some occasional odd shot compositions where actors were obscured by other actors, and in this weird cheesy transition effect they used a lot.
Apart from that, a solid, funny, memorable film. Worth checking out; even if you don't like the film, there's lots of naked boobies. Yeahhhhhh.......

OK I haven't seen this but Sam, it sounds as though your just trying to find your own indie film. You sound a bit too keen, I might watch it sometime but my hypothesis is that your trying to find an unlooked upon indie release, of which you can say you were one of the first wave of people who found it. Just the image that review gave to me. _________________ "Anybody who thinks that the public has any right to demand "social responsibility" from a goddamn punk rock band should step up and put his tongue up my ass" -- Steve Albini |

Far from it. I was just pleasantly surprised with how funny and well-made it is. It's everything I wish CUSAWIP could have been, in terms of acting and cinematography. It did have a $3000+ budget which exaplains a little, but still.. mega props to these guys. _________________ http://www.illimms.com |

I once knew a guy who did that all the time. The gulf between my "friend"'s constant smug arrogance in always being once step ahead of us mere mortals and Sam's recommendation of a film he likes is not only vast, I dare say it is unbridgeable. Just so you know. I have spent time amongst really disgusting specemins of 'humanity' and I think that particular trial by fire would be best used to positive effect by pointing up the difference between them and, say, normal people.

$3000 ... imagine all the porn I could buy with that...
...I'm just kidding.
But not really. _________________ Moore Than This - Treading the line between absurd and ... sightly less absurd. |

And this hasn't cleared up the most pressing issue; does the main character really get "blinded by his p*n*s", as Sam so vividly put it? Cause if he ain't, it ain't worth watching. _________________ Moore Than This - Treading the line between absurd and ... sightly less absurd. |

This guy sounds thoroughly despicable, but however, I wasn't merely criticising Sam for doing this. Your friend seems to be smugly arrogant because he's just the first to follow certain trends. Am I right? I actually do what I am accusing Sam of doing, moreso in music than in films. I find it does at times blind my judgement but often I am far more likely to like a film if I have discovered it independently. Sam, I know you agree because we've had numerous conversations about it.
In music in general, i'm hung up on the idea of my own Velvet Underground. Finding a group who no one liked at the time but were really ahead of their time. Trying to find some kind of godfather if you will. I don't do this to be "smug" "arrogant" and ahead of "mere mortals" as you put it, I do it because then I feel a real personal bond with the band. _________________ "Anybody who thinks that the public has any right to demand "social responsibility" from a goddamn punk rock band should step up and put his tongue up my ass" -- Steve Albini |

The guy in question was smug and arrogant not because he brought new stuff to my attention, but because he did so in a way that said "I am a genius for discovering this, and you are a mere peasant supping from the trough of the mainstream". Or words to that effect. The problem was in the delivery, not the content, and I've held off on experienicng some good bands and films just because my first exposure to them was through the medium of being patronised to an incredible degree. On the other hand, if someone simply says, "This is a good film" and I respect them and their opinion, well, that's enough impetus for me to go out and watch (say) 'Garden State' or 'Dazed and Confused' on DVD.

That's cool, I find that I do that as well. Be aware that none of my negative comments here are aimed at you, as I find you neither "disgusting" nor a "specemin" [typo]. _________________ Moore Than This - Treading the line between absurd and ... sightly less absurd. |
