Festivus (for the rest of us)
This month's BabelCon meeting will also be a Sci-Fi Christmas Festival at the Jones Creek Library on Sunday, December 14th, at 2 to 6 pm, in meeting room #3. Bring your friends, bring your family, and especially bring your geeks! We will be showing the new Sci-Fi movie "Christmas on Mars," plus upcoming movie trailers, all while serving Christmas delights. We encourage you to dress as your favorite Sci-Fi or Fantasy character!
SPECIAL GUEST: Santa Clause himself will be making an appearance, so you better be nice! We're trying to get naughty Darth Vader to make an appearance, to stage an epic battle between the forces of Nice and Naughty (Gary please contact me ASAP about this).
And speaking of naughty, after Santa exits stage left, we will play "Selfish Santa", so please bring a WRAPPED GIFT to the party in order for us have enough to go around. If you do not bring a gift, you cannot participate in the game.
SELFISH SANTA: All participants draw a Stargate symbol to determine their order. Person with the Earth symbol unwraps any gift from the pile, and then shows the gift to everyone. Each successive person, in the order determined from the drawing, can either 1) "steal" an already opened gift (if there's one they really like) or 2) be adventurous and go for a wrapped gift from the pile.
If the person chooses to steal, the person whose gift is stolen now repeats their turn and either 1) steals another person's gift (they cannot immediately steal back the gift that was just stolen from them) or 2) unwraps a new gift.
Since items can be stolen, the item in your possession is not yours until everyone has had a turn, OR the same gift is stolen 3 times (at which time it is out of play, and its current possessor can keep it).
Note: There will still be a normal BabelCon meeting on Dec 28th, to discuss the Borders Book Store event. There may be new people attending this month's meeting, because the event is a promotional one, so we need to have a meeting AFTER the Dec 27th event.

Thanks for the info. We knew there would be conflicts at this time of year. But it it was the only date they had open, so we didn't have any choice but to go ahead and schedule. :(
The only good news is that your toy drive ends at 3pm, and our Christmas Festival lasts until 6pm, so there is only an hour of overlap.

Two dates opened up in the last 24 hours... Saturday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec 20. Are either of those dates good for you guys? If so, we could move the party to either of those dates.

The 20th may be better. The Bast Alpha Christmas Party is on Dec 13th.

Due to the Jones Creek Christmas Parade marching directly in front of the library during the BabelCon Christmas Party, we are CHANGING THE DATE to DECEMBER 20th. We are sorry if this causes any inconvenience, but it was necessary, as the library is blocked off from the outside world during the parade.
Everything else about the party is unchanged, starting at 2pm and ending at 6pm. We will still have:
-- Food: Star Wars Cookies, Gingerbread Cybermen, Death Star Cheese Ball, Dalek Soda, Micro Chips & Dips - and chocolate. Lots of chocolate. Lots.
-- Movie: Christmas on Mars
-- Appearance by Santa Clause
-- Vader & Santa Duel: Naughty vs. Nice
-- "Selfish Santa" Game - bring a wrapped present.
-- Televised Trivia Competition - prize awarded!

Santa tells Vader he is on the "Naughty List".
FYI: Yes. That is me with Santa. It was at the Toys for Tots in MS, 3 years ago.

I love it!
I want to get a video of Santa and Vader fighting with those professional looking light sabers, and a snapshot of Vader on Santa's lap. Those would be great images for the TV and newspaper next year.
Do you plan to be there? We gotta have a rep for the Naughty side of the force.

We have been notified that children will be attending the BabelCon Christmas party today. So due to some inappropriate language in "Christmas on Mars" we will instead show the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of "Santa Clause Conquers the Martians". Personally, I think this is a much better choice anyway!
We will also be watching the "Star Wars Christmas Special" from the 80s.

I want to thank everyone who showed up at the party. The party started at 2:30 pm, but while we setup the accoutrements, the staff and early guests enjoyed the first two episodes of The Big Bang Theory.
The bit hit of the afternoon was the "Santa Clause Conquers the Martians", razzed continuously by the MST3K crew. By the time it was half over, the room was nearly filled to capacity.
Later, Alan took us through the highlights of the Star Wars Christmas Special -- such as Jefferson Starship singing into light sabers, Harvey Korman as a 4-armed alien version of Julia Child, and Chewbacca's dad engaging in cybersex. I think the producers of that show took "too much LDS".
After laughing our way through that, we played the Selfish Santa game. We had placed the presents under the traditional BabelCon pink tinsel & pink lighted Christmas tree. After drawing the Stargate symbols, we went in order. The favorite stolen present of the evening was the bobble head Darth Vader. Other presents included a Hulk transformer, Rubik's cube, Darth Tater, and a set of giant 3-inch-wide D&D dice.
And in case anyone is wondering... Santa Clause always wins against Darth Vader, because Nice always wins over Naughty! (although this time it was no contest)

Yes, it was better to be safe than sorry. Turning back was the right decision.
Perhaps next year we can coordinate something bigger and better between the two clubs, like maybe something at a hotel conference room or suite? Just a thought.
