|
|
Hello everyone my name is Gary I live in Covington, La with my wife and two kids. Thanks for accepting my request to the forums and Bast Alpha Garrison website. I first came across the 501st site years ago and didnt really pay attention to it not until i saw the extra features on the blu-ray star wars disc and realized it wasn't just about dressing up in a costume. Well while i was waiting for email reply for site and forum access I did some research about stormtrooper armor and accessories. I found helpful sources from the whitearmor link on the 501st site and links to others for boots and a how to guide on building a E11 Rifle. When i started looking at pricing i kinda thought to myself this isn't gonna be cheap. The lowest aromr i found was 400 with a helmet kit plus shipping up to 590 plus shipping. So im needing some advice from you guys on this.
Question: What is the differance between HIPS/ABS kits?

Welcome to the forum Gary, we are very glad you join up.
HIPS is High Impact polystyrene
ABS is Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene
As a costumer, this is what you need to know between HIPS and ABS:
1. HIPS costs less (generally 30-50% less)
2. HIPS is much more brittle (especially in thin plastics)
3. HIPS is easier to Vac Form because it does not 'Boil' (orange peel effect in ABS that can be controlled by drying the plastic prior to forming). This has lead some people to think that HIP gets better detail. Wrong! They're super-heating the plastic, which allows it to stretch more and become thin. The thickness of the plastic and the amount of vacuum is what determines the detail when Vacuum Forming.
4. HIPS is a pain to cut - see #2
5. HIPS only comes in Matte. 'Gloss' styrene has either been buffed or coated with another material (automotive clear coat is a wonderful UV inhibitor)
6. HIPS takes paint easier. Not sure if this still rings true, since the introduction of paints with elastisomers (Krylon fusion).
7. HIPS also becomes more brittle and will eventually crack and break faster than ABS with UV exposure.
In short if you plan to troop a lot, an ABS suit will look better longer and be more durable.

I forgot to ask, what armor did you find? The AM lite armor kit is the least expensive and the most durable. It is designed to fit bigger troopers. This will also allow you to get a more accurate helmet separately.
If you are a slim build you may need to trim the kit a bit.
We recommend you don't buy anything off of ebay.
If you have additional questions.
They are several of us, myself included that would be glad to assist you putting your armor together.

welcome to the forums, fellow St. Tammanian! While I can't help you with armor, I wish you luck with your journey. If you need any soft parts, though, let me know.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I hope to start work on aquiring the different pieces parts for my suit. Gonna start with making the E11 first and i have found a templete for it but couldn't really find a complete parts list.

Welcome to our boards!
Vader 1 is correct, ABS is the way to go.
Which storm trooper do you want to build? EP IV, V, or VI?

Welcome Kecro....
Glad to see another newbie like myself here. Well like you I started out reading searching and reading and more searching. I found the armor that Gary "Vader 1" is talking about. AM armor fits bigger guys like myself easily and can fit a range of shorter and bigger than myself... 5' 9" and 260lbs. Easy to trim, very durable, very versatile and very polished... versatile because my armor came with the spare parts to make either the A New Hope sand trooper or stormtrooper, the Empire Strikes Back Storm trooper just by making available the "extra" supplied parts and painting the helmet slightly different.
I bought my helmet separate from my body armor "which is called a lite kit like Vader 1 mentioned" cause I needed the bigger armor but not the quality of the bucket they offered.
anyway the guys that are here are awesome and I have heard great things about the Bast Alpha Garrison from different people from around the country and we are lucky to have them here in the state making it enjoyable to be part of this group.
Enjoy the build it will be awesome....

welcome!
don't forget to head to whitearmor.net and start your forum account there, that is the Detachment of the 501st Legion that covers classic white Stormtrooper costumes.
