The Bast Alpha BABES will be organizing and promoting a collection drive to collect new and used DVD's, video games and comic books appropriate for children and teens, to be distributed to local hospitals that treat sick children. We will conduct this drive at the New Orleans Comic Con, May 14 & 15 2011.
The BABE members will host, organize and collect the donations with the assistance of the other BAG members.
What we need:
1. Lady K (Karen) will contact Childrens Hospital in New Orleans and Our Lady of The Lake Children's Hospital in Baton Rouge to make arrangements for the donation and to find out what, if any, video game systems they have for the children to play and if they even have DVD players.
2. Fliers---I'd like to have some fliers customized with something Star Wars/501st/BABES/DVD. I don't have photo shop skills so we will need help with this.
3. Contact NOLA Comic Con to make arrangements and get permission to conduct the drive. Perhaps, have a separate table for it. If not, Gary said we can share a corner of the BAG fan table.
4. Delivering fliers to appropriate businesses in the area prior to the con so people will be aware and bring videos.
5. Contact local business for donations.
6. Donation letter for obtaining donations from businesses. Since it's going to Children's Hospital.....not the 501st......(that's very important) could it be considered a tax right off?
7. Distribution of fliers at NOLA Con, especially on Saturday so people can bring back their donation on Sunday.
8. Collection box/container. Something clever....giant Death Star or a Rancor pit to place the DVD's in?

JASON---Would you look into to #3 for us since you're good friends with Ronnie. I will email him, but you've got the inside track. ;-)

JEFF KENT--- can you help us with #6, please?

Form a basic letter that we can print out individually and take with us to ask for donations to give it credibility.

Thinking you might want to ask if they want anything else --
It might be nice to ask the Neurofibromatosis clinic at Children's Hospital what they need as there are not many clinics that specialize in this in the country. There are limited resources and outreach programs for families that have an occurrence of this genetic disorder in their children and/or other family members. There is no cure at this time.

I'm up for passing around fliers when we've got them.
Also, just curious if it would be possible to donate a game system as well? Just in case anyone has something floating around that they don't use anymore *cough* xbox *cough* SNES *cough* (not sure if the hubby would be willing to part with them, but if so I'd rather donate them than get a pittance for them at gamestop).

Thanks for that information, Sam. Am I correct in thinking that what you're talking about is a clinic area inside the children's hospital? Do you know if the children spend a lot of time at the clinic? MY son goes to the audiology/cochlear implant clinic at CHNOLA, but, he doesn't spend any time there. Just go for appointments and leave so there's no need for things like movies and video games.
I will call and inquire if this particular clinic has need for the things we're collecting.
Jaclyn, thanks for volunteering to help out with this. We're going to need all of us BABES at the con to take turns with this. We'll know more specifics after we find out from the con what all we can do. I think that if anyone wants to donate a game system and a few games that we could take them and find one of the hospitals that can use them. I have an X-box that we don't use anymore I could donate .
I found a Blockbuster going out of business last weekend and I bought 7 appropriate movies for $2.99 each to donate.

The title doesn't say anything about the BABES.
I cleared this with Gary before I posted it.
What's the point of having a special female squad within our garrison if we don't do anything? Not trying to cause division and I'm surprised it's being viewed that way. We're just trying to do something other than look pretty. This is a very male dominated fandom. The purpose of this is to promote more participation and involvement from the females in the group, including the wives/sig other of the guys. This is not to exclude anyone or separate. Step up and offer to help if you can.

I would like to help you with a letter, but first I believe we should nail down the charity organizations you plan to donate to. That would go for the flyer as well.
I would encourage you not to sell yourself short for you could very well receive more donations 2 hospitals could store. Choose several. Homes that house sick kids wile being treated such as Ronald Mc Donald House, etc.
Set up a meeting with NOLA COMIC CON and see if they would be willing to take $1 off admission for bringing in one DVD or game buying a ticket at the door. Also offer to include them in your Flyers, website, and FB page etc.
As for using the word "Tax write offs" on your print material, I would stay clear of that. Business owners make donations they know the drill and they have accountants.
One last suggestion: contact the garrison that did this drive in Dallas and speak with the person that was in charge. You'll get great feed back I'm sure and you'll beable to feed off of their ideas. That's exactly what I did with shoot the trooper. And believe me that most of these guys love to share with others the things that work and things that don't.

From past dealings with this sort of thing and being Charity Liason,
first and formost the NOLA con people should be contacted first
since this is their event! There was some crap when we did the Breast Cancer Event with the Star Garrison and while everything was a success,
the event people are the go or no go on any charity based events at Main events.
Then with their blessing proceed, just wanted to give you's a heads up.

How about print some r2kts units and everyone who donates a dollar gets to write their name on one and color it and maybe there can have a board to post them on -- (kind of like MDA has shamrocks) and the proceeds could go to Make a Wish or the Relay for Life Kenner Event (which I'm assuming is associated with the American Cancer Society).
Just a thought or maybe for another event???

Ok , i talked to ronnie. There will be an extra table for the dvd drive. also, any one buying tickets at the door will get 1$ off ticket if they bring a dvd or game. All he asks is to Have the nola comic con logo somewhere on the flyer. The other thing is he wants a couple of us in costume at his shop for free comic book day. We can promote the dvd drive there as well. I understand some of us will be at bsi and some off us will be in slidell, but i feel we really need to make a good showing at his shop. Ronnie has done alot for the 501st and the fact he will be giving discounts on tickets to help the ladies charity drive really shows his support. I will be the first to say i will be at his shop for free comic day. I am glad i could help thus far and if you girls need anything else from me to help with this charity event just ask.

no prob lady k, i joined the 501st for this exact reason. i feel i have a lot to offer BAG and look forward to doing everything i can to help all future events. on another note, i told ronnie you will be contacting him about getting the nola con logo and discount info for the flyer. this dvd drive is an awesome idea. way to go ladies

I just spoke with someone at Children's Hospital in New Orleans and I'm a little disappointed. They will not take comic books or used DVD and games. They will only take NEW DVD's and PS2 and PS3 video games. She said that was hospital policy. She also wasn't very open to the idea of the DVD drive or of us coming in costume to deliver the items. :(
I have a call in to the Children's Hospital in Baton Rouge. I"m just waiting for the lady to return my call.
On to other hospitals that treat children, I guess.
