Slave Leia Building Party

I think I am going to write up a tutorial on how I make mine (which I am in the process of doing). I'm using on materials available at WalMart and your local hardware store, as opposed to some of the tutorials I've seen that use sintra, etc. I'd love to help out any other B.A.B.E.S. interested in making their own. If all goes well, and I don't find unforeseen problems, this could be something that would be doable in just 1 afternoon (2 if you need help with the paint job and attaching the fabric bits). I'm kinda booked until April, and with Mardi Gras, I feel like the rest of the Garrison is too. Sometime later on? Would there be any interest?

All four costumes are in the rebel legion. Angelle is from Kessel base in Texas. Keep me posted on this gathering. While I've made this costume before (GAH! 16 years ago! I feel old), it was quite craptacular. I would really love to have an updated version that doesn't look awful, especially once I've kicked the baby fat off my rear and belly.

Princess Sandy BAG Member Joined: 18 Sep 2009 Posts: 1346 : Location: Houma, LA Items	Posted: Mon Feb 21, 2011 9:43 pm    Post subject: :)   No problem girls Jamin is actually making a new version of his slave leia costume, i am particularly interested in the new bra because he is supposed to be using a more rubberized resin like substance for the bottom part of the bra that wraps around you, which is a very weak point on most of these bras for people, including myself (thank you Keith for fixing it for me ). His costumes have some of the rough detailings of the original costume, even down to actually having the snake heads on the bicep cuff in his new version, and he is using a new paint that is much more metallic than his first version, which was wonderful to begin with. He uses a form of urethane resin with a wire shell. The Legion is quite hard on this costume and many others as of late (especially any face characters), for accuracy, down to having the plain gold hoop earrings in, and not one piece of hair out of place, for your submission pictures, haha, trust me, i can tell you stories about this, lol. You will however have a bit of leeway on the suede you use for your bras and your boots, as a few different shades are accepted, but the bra suede and your boots must match, so keep that in mind. Your skirt fabric they are a bit more harsh with, but you do have a small shade range for that as well, it is more the texture of the skirt fabric that concerns them in that regard. It needs to be a silk like fabric that flows and drapes well, nothing too thick or heavy like velvet, etc., but cannot be sheer either. The Rebel Legion is going to be going through a re-vamp, since costume standards have been all updated for more accuracy by the different detachment command staff officers and the LMO of the legion. With that being said, i have been informed as the XO of our base here for Louisiana and as the Galactic Senate Detachment XO for the Legion (covers all Leia and Padme costumes, as well as all senatorial or royalty costumes in star wars), that the LMO will be going through each base and re-judging all of the costumes that were approved years ago in the old frames to ensure that they still meet the standards of today. This may take a year or two for them to fully complete this process i am told, since the Rebel Legion has bases all over the world, just like the 501st, but it is definitely happening. The slave leia costume is a nice costume to have for conventions but is normally not accepted at most legion events throughout the year due to the revealing nature of the costume. I believe that conventions and Mardi Gras would be about the only times you can wear it. That was my problem coming into the group because that was my only approved costume and it wasnt a troopable one, lol. So i then had to come up with other costumes to get approved in order to troop, and not have to borrow a costume from someone, lol. I just dont want anyone to get discouraged or disappointed after the fact if you make this costume and you get it approved and then you find out you cannot troop in it for most things, which had never occurred to me until after the fact, in my situation when i joined. Liz, That is an excellent idea. We always have armor parties. A Slave Leia party sounds awesome. You are very talented, I'm sure your Slave Leia costume will look great. It really does raise the quality, so its totally worth it. On the skirt fabric, I don't understand why people can't seem to understand the difference between silk sheen and satin shine. Its a huge difference. For money's sake, I'm probably going to have to go with a faux silk unless I can find a good deal. Also, I got my boots in yesterday! I'll have plenty of material left over when I cut them to make the bra lining with. They will definitely match. If all goes well, I can rec the ebay seller for future Slave Leia's in our midst. Question about the earrings: do they need to be just hoops or do they have to have the little "teeth" bits? Also, how picky are the judges about the braid length? As I've seen some that were super super long. Thanks! @Vader1 Us girls need armor parties, too!

Two of my friends and I got ours from www.amiclubwear.com They have a variety of heights of faux suede boots in grayish/gray brown colors. Usually you can get them around $20, and sometimes as little as $12 when they are on sale. And once you cut the top off the boots, you have matching fabric for the top! Two of my friends and I have Jamin kits. One other has a different kit, made by a woman. Can't remember the makers name. There is another guy, on WPE who was also making a kit, but he's not RL so he's not marketing to the right crowd to compete with Jamin. I have seen some really awesome home-made Slave Leia's (and some not-so-awesome ones). Jamin's kits are pretty expensive, so home-made may be a cheaper route if you know what you are doing, and it sounds like you do. :)

You can get it with or without the gold piece on the end, which would be preferable since the piece she provides is not accurate. There is a range of shades to choose from, and they are not expensive. I dont know how long your hair is naturally, if it is long enough you may be able to do the plain bun on top your head that the braid comes out of the bottom of it. If not, then you can just get a small bun hairpiece for that purpose to fit in between the gold bun holders. I personally use my own hair for the bun. Your natural hair color is accepted for approval with the Leia and Padme costumes, as long as your hair isnt a color that does not appear naturally on a human head, such as purple or blue, etc. As for the earrings, they are a thin, plain, normal mid-sized gold hoop. This can be acquired at any costume jewelry shop for cheap. I just so happened to have real gold hoops that were exactly accurate to Leia's earrings that my mother had given to me years ago, that used to be hers that she passed down to me. I also have to agree that even though standards to costumes being more strict does make for more frustration, but is totally worth it in the end, and is the reason why Lucas uses the 501st and the Rebel Legion for events. As for the boots, i also got my boots off ebay by sheer luck for a great price and they are real suede leather so they will last for a very long time; and to top it off, the olive suede i had in my bra just so happened to match my boots when i got the boots in, haha! Yes, you will have enough extra suede from your boots to put in your bra after you cut the V shape in the front to get ready for the gold boot topper. I find that a drab olive is the most accurate, but others use shades of a greenish gray light smoky color, or a variation of brownish tan, but your two best alternatives are green or gray. Leia used plain thin black cording to hold the bra to her, which is very cheap and easy to get from any fabric shop. I need to re-do mine because it is too tight on my shoulders and cuts into me when i wear it for a while. My skirt material i dont believe is real silk or anything. It can be a synthetic fabric. You dont want a real shiny satin, they wont like that. If you will be at the Caesar parade or the Tucks parade, you can come look at it since i will be slave leia for both. I cant honestly tell you exactly what my skirt material is made out of, i got that skirt from Jamin. As long as it doesnt shine like satin and its not velvet or velour, and it drapes well and is thin but not too thin, it should be just fine. A few slightly different variations of metal paint colors are allowed, as long as it is a variant of copper or gold. I have been told that some paints do not do well with certain materials for these bras and many bras have been ruined by using the wrong kind of paint, whereas it makes the bra brittle and break because it doesn't agree with the paint used. It comes in the pack doubled and then braided. I bought 2 packs, unbraided and unfolded them, then braided it myself. Then I attached it to my head to figure out the correct length. Looking at screenshots, the end of Leia's hair fell just below the bottom of the bra top when she had it come over her shoulder to the front. At various times my hair is long enough to make the bun, but not thick enough. So I use a bun-maker and wrap it with a smaller braid of kanekalon hair. The hair clips then clip into the fake hair and not my real hair, so I don't damage as much of my own. Also, if you study the screenshots, her bun is about half the size of her head! The benefit to me to use the kanekalon hair is price ~$2 for each jumbo braid, and I used a total of the 3 packs. I have one set of reddish hair-pieces for when my hair is red (D*con) and one set of really dark brown almost black (Wizard World). So whenever the mood strikes me to change up my hair color, I can change my Leia hair pieces too. I can't tell you what my skirt fabric is as I got it from a friend. It was left-over from making her SL. :) The other issue you will get into is the underwear. There are separate camps of thought on that depending upon how comfortable you are.

How could i forget about the underwear issue!!! I used a nude g-string from Victoria's Secret. I know some slave leia's that dont wear anything under the skirt, lol, which i would not advise for many different reasons, haha. I also know that another popular thing to use is a clear strapped thong so that there are clear straps on your hips. Angie in our base here actually has a thong built into her costume that is attached to her front and back plate under the skirt. A thong is a must for this costume. Be prepared for your rear to show a bit, it is unavoidable in this costume.
