i know some of you aren't fans of elevated baskets, but at least the one in pulaski county is on a mound. this one in charlotte looks like a bottle rocket.

| Props to Stan McDaniel for demanding skills (accuracy and finesse) to complete a hole. As long as the number of elevated baskets on a course is reasonable, I'm all for it. |

Just to play Devil's advocate here, what would your definition of reasonable be? Also Dan, can I give you money for the Jam at the Classic? KP _________________ Discraft guys drive nice trucks. |

Reasonable is subjective. My reasonable depends on the course. A course on the side of a mountain can reasonably have 0-2 elevated baskets, may they be hanging, on a mound, on a tree stump, or as a bottle rocket. An entirely flat course could have 0-9 elevated baskets (notice 0 may always be a reasonable option). I see them as a way to enhance a course, make it more interesting as a player and observer, demand skill, and initiate a scoring spread that may not be there without it. I think the game of disc golf should have more risk/reward, and since people don't/can't always build that aspect into the natural terrain, I think elevated baskets are a brilliant solution. OB is another way, but that should be reasonably used as well.
I have read that some think it is a gimmick, and compare them to putt-putt mini-golf. I whole-heartedly disagree. While many comparisons between disc golf and ball golf make sense (down to tiki vs mini-golf), not all of them do. Here are a few examples of comparisons that tie together:
Every golf hole may be the same size, but they are located on different parts of a sloped green. If you have a downhill putt and put too much force into the stroke, the ball is going to travel well past the hole. A downhill disc golf putt to an elevated baskets acts the same way. If you want to put it in, you take the chance of ending up well past the hole. How many ball golf courses have flat greens?
I see a flat-ground elevated basket as the following type of golf putt: there is a ridge you have to get over before the hole, but the hole is on the downslope on the backside of the ridge. You need enough force to get (over the slope) to the hole, but don't want to run it and end up way past.
I know most Lynchburgers sentiment differs from mine on the subject, so I offer this warning: Walnut Creek WILL have an elevated basket for the Mountain Jam. muh hahaha. No more questions, please.
"Devil" and "God" should carry the same weight. Both proper nouns... Both improper imo.
You can give me as much money as you want at the Classic. JK. I'll take money and sign you up, no problem.
Lastly, if you want to discuss this with me more, my home phone is 434-978-1719. I wasted WAY TOO MUCH time at work typing this up! haha |

Elevated baskets are OK, but I prefer tough pin positions to simply erecting a basket that is 3-5' higher off the putting surface than the rest of the holes. A 20' putt downhill, uphill, or to a basket with drop-off just past is alot harder than a 20' putt on flat gound. Fortunatley, here in Western Virginia our courses offer plenty of difficult pin positions from great course design of the land used, so we really do not have the need for the type of contraption shown above. _________________ http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=2523 |

i generally agree with the previous sentiment (i think it was yours, jeff) that elevated baskets that are in naturally elevated positions are awesome. course designers should learn to use the terrain, rather than make crap like the picture above. and i wasn't trying to get into a theological debate. just this campus minister giving KP a hard time. it was supposed to be funny. _________________ "man, i'd go call my friends and family" |

the course where i took that pic from is fairly flat. the basket was about the same height as my head. you could do a finger roll into the basket if you were close enough. _________________ those cedars are really getting old |

1. No theological debates on here.
2. Jeff is correct as usual
3. Dan is correct as usual
4. I still don't have to like artificially elevated baskets.
5. I concede that a smattering of the above are useful.
6. There is talk of making poleholes smaller in dimension, to make it more difficult.
(More info on PDGA board)(Ridiculous)(IMO)
7. Most humorous bumper sticker I have seen lately:"Militant Agnostic, I don't know and you don't either"
8. What is the entry fee for the Jam?

I'll jump in here as my home course has one elevated basket.
It's my favorite hole on the course at Dorey park. Having the basket elevated turns an ace/sure deuce hole into a risk/reward decision.
Go for the ace and over drive the pin and you're in deep shule.
Place your drive too far to the left and you're in the trees, with the bottom of the basket at eye level, thinner trees to the right, but if you're short there's usually not a clear shot.
Flub the putt and it's almost guaranteed that your rolling away.
Perhaps the most aggravating hole at Dorey but it's taken me from a close second to leading more than once.
No I wouldn't be interested in play the hole pictured above, but I do like an elevated basket when it's done right. |
