"Oh, I doubt you'll miss my less than sharp eyes." Vord told Dras from the cart. "Fire I can do, in large quantities... how are your own spells on that front? And you, Cassie?"

DRAS

"I know three spells that inflict flames upon the environment," informed Dras. "I'll be sure to prepare at least two of them each day while in winter wolf infested territory."

"I'll see about preparing a few such spells too. I may have to buy a scroll and scribe it, though." said Cassie. "Shouldn't take too long."

Haldiel eyes the people around him, mildly miffed he wasn't even asked... "As luck would have it, I also have a fire spell on hand. At the cost of some flexibility, I could prepare it twice per day, perhaps? And Cassie is more than welcome to use it, if that would be of assistance."

Share and share alike, afterall...

((She can swipe Scorching Ray off him if that'd help.))

The party rested in Habrigborough, and Cassie spent a few hours with Haldiel copying the spell he had offered after first going out to purchase proper inks that would let her affix it without great personal effort. The night was cold, and the next morning brought with it a few light touches of snow that drifted down and melted as it came into contact with the ground. Shivering a little, the party set out again, glancing nervously about for dangers of any sort.

Suncome 8, midday

((Sound of DM rolling Spot checks.))

"Winter wolves!" said Dras, pointing into the distance. "Stay ready."

((3 winter wolves sighted 180 feet away, which is more than I care to draw a map for. See OOC thread for riding order that nobody complained about.))

Initiative:
Dras
Haldiel
Thorn
Vord
Wolves
Valerie
Cassie

DRAS

"Artillery, commence firing!" shouted Dras, at nobody in particular, gesturing arcanely at the wolf pack. It was the first time he used that one of the spells so recently acquired, and wanted to get a feel for it, so it was best to cast it at a safe distance.

Casting: Molten Strike at a maximum number of WWs.
((I forget where the spell is from, though. I'll assume you have the pertinent stats.))

Haldiel Ameth

Haldiel reacts swiftly - 'Nobody charge, this may be an ambush!' he ordered, as he spurred the horse to move forward, so as to have the party less bunched up lest the beasts attempt to breathe.

Then, whilst still mounted, he uttered the arcane phrases and waved his arms in the arcane symbols, and as the magic energies began to form, they ... boosted.

When they shot off at the wolves, they struck not with fire nor explosions, but with a ... BWAMPF of sparkling, blinding glitter.

Twice as big as it was supposed to be. And any caster with the spellcraft to know what he was doing will realise it wasn't doing that when he started the spell either...

((Move 40ft forward.
Concentration check for casting spell while mount is moving: 24.
Spell cast: Glitterdust, Widened to a 20ft radius burst. This will hit all three of the wolves.
Will save DC 17 vs Blindness, and a -40 to hide checks (har) regardless, to all creatures caught in the area.
Any spellcaster watching will know that that spell ... wasn't supposed to be that big.))

One wolf was set on fire by Dras' long-range artillery burst spell, yipping and growled, and then Haldiel lit them all up even more, blinding another. Thorn dismounted to fight more effectively, watching the wolves carefully.

Finally some enemies I don't have to think about.

Vord moved forward in the line, daintily jumping off the cart to get near the winter wolves. Reaching with his mind to the extreme of his current level of strength, he focused briefly and a circle of searing flames sprang up on a line through all three wolves. In case the blind one would happen to stagger into it, he set it up so the nastier end of the flames pointed outward.

((15 fire damage, reflex half, DC... 18? Yeah, that's the one. Not accounting for any fire vulnerabilities that may or may not be present in these cold-breathing things. 42 pp left.))

The first wolf jumped out of the fire and back into the circle before breathing frost on the one that Dras had set on fire. It snarled something that was obviously in a language native to the creatures, and the other two retreated with it.

"...Damnit. I was hoping to leave them forced to charge in disarray." Haldiel grumbled as he saw the wolves get handily corraled... several hundred feet away from the party.

Valerie

"Well, if they won't come to us, we'll just go to them," Val replied, guiding her horse forward at a trot.

((Horse is double-moving to move 75 feet forward. Val is readying action to do a regular dismount if the wolves leave the fire.))

DRAS

Dras did not facepalm only because he expected something like this from Valerie - so he kept his silence.

"...I... I said to hang back", hissed Haldiel, honestly frankly shocked.
No advantage was gained from such a move - and every form of disadvantage possible short of stripping ones armor off turning around and mooning the opponent.

(He'd seen that once. They must have thought they were being hilarious right up to the point where they were suddenly reminded of the existance of crossbow bolts...)

"Doing that will kill her someday," commented Dras grimly.

((Winter wolves are still 180 feet away from most of the party and inside a ring of fire that faces outwards.))

DRAS

"Then let's get closer - hidey-ho, Mira!" Dras directed his horse towards the ring of fire. He concentrated, and placed a ball of flame over where he figured the wolves would be, which then dropped as gravity brought it down.

Casting: Flaming Sphere.
Concentration: Don't be silly.
If he manages to hit a wolf blindly like this, the damage is (6+4) = 10, and is negated by a DC 17 Reflex save. This too sets things on fire, AFAIK.
((Having the horse double-move as a move action - though I'm not certain I can do that. If not, then I'll only have her move once, 40'. In either case, that should get me within Medium range of the wolves, which is 140' for me.))

Haldiel Ameth

'Careful - if we drive too close they could charge right through that to get to us!' Haldiel warned, as he spurred his mount to pull just in front of Dras, so as to give the man reprieve from a direct charge.

He then considered his options, and readied a Magic Missile spell - should the wolves attempt to escape their enclosure and come charging forward, he'll hit them with a Magic Missile. And, with a little luck, ruin their day in ways they will not appreciate.

((Idle note: I was 40ft ahead of the party prior to this move.
As for Concentration checks... ahahaha. Yeah, sure.))

With a brief destructive thought, Vord added a ring of sparkling energy atop the existing circle of flame. This one pointed inward, though, causing arc lightning to flare at anyone inside.

((Wall of Energy, Lightning. DC 20 Reflex, 4 damage to everyone within 10 feet inside. In case anyone tries to get out, both walls are dealing 10 damage from that, Reflex DC 18 and 20 again. 37 pp left.))

There were several flashing bursts as the wolves panicked and tried to break out of the twin circles of energy. It was futile; all three died mid-leap and collapsed a little while outside, where their fur continued to slowly singe as snow fell a few feet away from them, outside of the reach of the psionic fire that was now scorching the ground and brewing up a great deal of smoke from wet leaves.

((600 XP to everyone. End initiative.))

"Well done, our Professional Wizard!" Dras congratulated Vord, as he slowly approached the devastation to make assessments of the bodies.

Haldiel nods, frankly impressed. "Yes indeed..." A thought strikes him. "...If I may ask, how often can Vord perform such feats?"

((Assuming Vord isn't in earshot range. If he is, question asked directly.))

He rides forward with Dras - partly to examine them also, partly because one does not leave a wizard by themselves. He seems to be performing such a task automatically, with barely a forethought.

The dead winter wolves turned out to have some kind of amulets about their necks, little bone charms hanging from twists of sinew.
