O.K. Guys, i went ahead and rebuilt my 2289 using a 2240 Original Pistol barrel instead of the 24" crossman barrel which i meant to mount on it, but that experiment can wait in light of the possible fun involved with the PFT category this year.
I'm sure it will qualify under the limit with counted pumps and can't wait to chrony it soon..gotta figure that out before i can even practice adequately...of course i only rebuilt it today after finally finding that virgin pistol barrel...I left the port-hole on the barrel at regular size but am not sure if it will limit or increase the power of what is underneath for power. ANY input would be appreciated.
I managed time to shoot a couple pics, and took one shot at 5 pumps, 25-30 Yds, at @ 6" square corner of plastic- limited by going over deck-rail out the kitchen door, & HIT plastic by sound...Then she said " Shut the door, it,s windy"...
ANYHOW...I accidently found the original grips in matching color supplied with my 2289, just had to remove both the 2289 One-piece barrel band and spring-clip for supplied stock due to comfort & aesthetics.

There will be a chronograph with some one at most matches. If you don't mind me asking, what happened to the original 2289 barrel? I am sure that with 10 pumps, it will most likely be under 500 fps with that short barrel. Take care. _________________ Keyrigger

The 14" orig. 2289 barrel currently is part of my 225o set-up and might be the most accurate of three sizes i have been swapping out.. this is the first time the shortie will see any real use.
I think i will take it to work and sight it in a little better during breaks, maybe i will post on results tonight.
Heh-Heh; i was just thinking i might be able to fashion a holster for this beast...if i cut the toe off an old rubber boot |

Well, I went in early to jury-rig a sighting target and managed to get 30 shots in with the cheap red-dot sight on it- just to see if the short barrel was accurate at all; I used crossman hollowpoints and measured 10 yards from target to a post which i kept the muzzle behind to keep it consistent. There were several factors that made it difficult like low light- lucky 2 shoot inside on a rainy day at work so, can't B-otch; also i used my smoke-breaks out back so the first ten shots before work, 5 shots/ break, 10 at lunch = 30 ttl. with smoke in yer eyes...2-handed with a cig??
The other usual variables cropped up- you guys seem to have something there with the trigger smoothness and stages affecting accuracy in pistol shooting - much MORE than air-rifles for sure.
I used 10 pumps/ shot, adjusted after first 10 at crosshairs, added a 1 7/8 circle for second and third sets, adjusted several more times, and decided other optics are needed, but was surprised by the results overall re: the pistols own consistency despite the learning curve involved with all the other um, variables
Will post this text as is & try a couple pics.-KEG

Switched to a damaged cell-pack of old crossman wadcutters today, got about 40 shots during breaks and at the same distance with 8 pumps per shot actually hit the larger circle by about 50 % more...I did switch from a 2-hand hold to the crook of my elbow, smoke & all, gasp, and tore two 1 1/2" circles THRU the backer.. reamed at least 4 holes and tightened the group through tweaking the red-dot and now I know it has some potential accuracy as-is.. i will post a pic of the carnage later.

Extra BLINKIN....!.. with a red dot....tweaked it s'more, switched to pointed hunters, and improved it s'more...,yet, it ALL needed rebuilding so a temporary switch, & the original BEHEMOTH is revealed. ...

Passed about a hundred wadcutters through it to sight it in as you see it set up here and had far better results than with the 2240 barrel. At the same 10+ yds, 8 Pumps, with a 2" circle I can hit it with all 5 shots each-and 3 hits are generally within an inch of the centre crosshair..this speaks pretty well of the accuracy of the original Backpacker barrel. It would certainly do to have some competitive fun as is but it weighs @ 3.6 lbs and the optics need changing anyway. I will keep posting updates on these experiments as i make changes but i would like to try to chrony it soon as it is...later |

Well What do ya know...i got to chrony it, thanks EW...at 9 pumps i am getting a consistent 490 fps using both crosman wadcutters or hollowpoint pellets...right in the zone for PFT and hopefully my arm won't get too sore from pumping
Now to re-sight it at a more suitable distance using the nine pumps. ......WooHooo! |
