The URL leads to some photos of the Caddy as originally supplied.

What you get with a Caddy Camper from VW is a 5 seat Caddy Life and a Camper fitout which includes:
- fold forward seat backs on the front seats
- a fold up bed 1100x2000mm
- curtains - front ones zippered onto the bed and on the rear window held on with magnets
- 2 window bags,
- 2 fold up chairs, a fold up table plus storage bags for these
- a sun roof
- a flouro light in the main cabin
- 2 lights built into the tailgate
- a tailgate tent
As can be seen in the photos the front seat backs fold forward, the rear seat backs fold down and the bed folds out on top of them. The front of the bed is held up with straps tied to the grab handles.
The Camper is marketed as a weekend away vehicle for 2 people with room to carry friends/children to the cinema, etc. Most of my camping is weekends away but just me and my wife. Some trips have been up to 3 weeks
The original set up was not very satisfactory on a number of points:
- there was not enough space to put things away
- there is no fridge and no dual battery system
- the bed is very narrow and with the curtains in place quite clastrophobic
- the tent has no flyscreens
- the tent provides useful extra space but is tedious to put up and because of the heavy vinyl used must be folded up when put away. This takes fair bit of time which is awkward when it is raining or windy.
To remedy some of these problems I took out the seats, replaced the bed with a wider one (1500x2000mm), put in new curtains, put in the kitchen drawer, added new cupboards, enlarged the storage space and put on a side awning attached to the roof rack mounts.
It still needs some development but meets about 85% of my needs.

Looks great. Did you make this?
Are those side bags available from VW? |
I did. The side bags are part of the original camper fitout from VW you can probably get them as individual items. |

The drawer sliders a ball bearing units from Haefale the german kitchen (etc) company via a kitchen supplies shop. There are full extension 710mm long sliders rated for 35kg load at fully extended.
You might not be able to see it in the photos but the sliders are fasten to an aluminium frame and the boxes are set onto that. It means boxes can be taken out if needs be or replaced. When I'm not camping I use shopping boxes instead, these plain rectangles with no internal partitions. |

Thanks. We are going to Tasmania for a month. I will look into converting our Caddy after that.
We will know what we need for our next trip after the Tassie trip. _________________ Regards,
