| Lainaus: | Anadarko Group Makes Oil Find
A consortium led by Anadarko Petroleum Corp. said it had discovered oil off the coast of Sierra Leone, potentially opening up a vast new petroleum province in the deep waters off West Africa.
It is the latest in a string of deep-water finds spurred by advances in drilling technologies and exploration strategies that are changing the face of the oil industry. It comes in the same month BP PLC announced it had made a "giant" new oil discovery below the Gulf of Mexico after drilling what is thought to be the world's deepest well. That field is estimated to contain three billion barrels of oil, although only a fraction of that may ever be extracted, BP said... |
Veden syvyys aluella on käsittääkseni pääasiassa yli 5000 jalkaa, mikä on kiintoisaa. _________________ Polar Bear, Igloo, Radar |

| Lainaus: | Sea Lion success
Shares in Rockhopper Exploration have surged by 50% today on news that the South Atlantic Sea Lion exploration well has been successfully drilled and initial results indicate the first oil discovery in the region.
Rockhopper said its 100% operated 14/10-2 Sea Lion exploration well drilled with the Ocean Guardian semi-submersible intersected 150 metres (494 ft) of gross pay and 52 metres (170 ft) of net pay after drilling to a depth of 2,744 metres (9,000 ft).
“Initial data collected indicate that this well is an oil discovery, which would be the first in the North Falkland Basin,” London-listed Rockhopper stated.
Detailing the results Rockhopper added: “The company has run a suite of wireline logs and logging data collected thus far indicate that the well has encountered a 150 metre gross interval of sand and shales. The data show that the well has 53 metres of net pay distributed in multiple pay zones, the thickest of which has a net pay of 25 metres. These pay zones have an average porosity of 19%.”
Clearly delighted with the news, Sam Moody, Rockhopper's managing director declared: “We are extremely excited by the results of this well.”
He went on: “While we are presently acquiring additional data, current indications are that we have made the first oil discovery in the North Falkland Basin. We will now focus on analysing in more detail the data gathered from the well, in addition to continuing preparations for the drilling of our Ernest prospect later in the year.”
Sea Lion marks the second success for the Falklands drilling campaign currently being carried out by the Ocean Guardian rig following the discovery of gas in the 14/19-1 Liz exploration drilled by Desire Petroleum – and in which Rockhopper has a 7.5% stake.
Drilling on Sea Lion commenced just after midnight on 16 April.
Shares in Rockhopper have risen 50.25% today on the Liz exploration well news to hit £0.87.5p |
Rockhopperin tiedote _________________ Polar Bear, Igloo, Radar |

| Lainaus: | PetroChina's local oil find smaller than originally thought
A big new oil find trumpeted by PetroChina 0857.HK three years ago is turning out to be smaller than first thought, showing how difficult it will be for China to slow its rising need for energy imports.
The Jidong Nanpu reserve, trapped under the shallow water of Bohai Bay off north China, was originally labelled one of the biggest discoveries in decades, but is proving an embarrassment after PetroChina's oil drillers realised it had been overstated and more exploration was needed to verify its size.
Asia's top oil and gas firm looks likely to miss an ambitious target set in May 2007 of pumping 200,000 barrels of crude per day from Jidong Nanpu by 2012, or 10 percent of the firm's current output.
For China, the world's second-largest energy user, the lack of a big new oilfield means it will have to maintain heavy investments to recover reserves at ageing main fields such as Daqing and Shengli, and push for organic, rapid growth in cleaner fuel natural gas.
It also means China needs to acquire more overseas assets, along the lines of CNOOC's 0883.HK purchase last month of a $3.1-billion stake in Argentina's Bridas Energy and Sinochem's $3 billion deal to buy Statoil's STL.OL deepsea stake in Brazil.
But with China's crude import dependence set to surge above 80 percent by 2030 from just above half now, according to the International Energy Agency, firms have a long way to go to plug that hole with acquisitions.
So far their foreign equity output makes up less than 10 percent of Chinese oil demand, analysts estimate.
"China's demand is growing at about 360,000 bpd a year while overseas equity has only added 60,000 bpd a year. That means China's import dependence will continue to grow despite acquisitions," said Gordon Kwan, head of regional energy research at Korean investment firm Mirae Asset Securities. |

| Lainaus: | Saskatchewan entrepreneur aims to revolutionize global oil exploration
A Saskatchewan entrepreneur could revolutionize oil exploration worldwide, with a new technology that uses readily available satellite data to determine if a property has commercial amounts of oil or gas underground.
Robert Fisher, CEO of Leaf and Stone Resonance Services Ltd. in Saskatoon, uses a process called “resonance coupling” that he says can tell if there is oil and/or gas on a property, onshore or offshore.
To date, he has mostly used the technology to help find mineral formations; Fisher says it’s good for finding gold, and for kimberlite pipes, the geological host for diamonds.
Fisher says his Texas-based partner David Carr developed and tested resonance coupling in oil and gas for 21 months in the Permian Basin in Texas. Fisher’s Leaf and Stone is a marketing company for the technology. To date, they have had one commercial success with oil – the delineation of a heavy oil field near Lloydminster, Saskatchewan.
The technology costs $100 per-acre, and with oil companies paying up to $4,000 per acre in land costs for big resource plays in Canada (Cardium, Bakken etc), it could end up saving companies millions of dollars in exploration.
Resonance coupling is basically matching oil to oil at a molecular level. “Every molecule has a unique resonance,” Fisher said in a recent interview. “We figured out how to measure it and how to match it. The hydrogen atom has one electron, in orbit – which puts it off balance. It vibrates in its own unique way.
“Oil has a unique resonance. Since oil is a liquid, it absorbs materials from the surrounding reservoir whereas natural gas does not. Different samples of oil have their own unique resonance whereas gas does not...” |
