Concentrating on the spell, Dras went closer to examine the obelisk for anything interesting or unusual that he hasn't seen yet.

Valerie had decided to travel with Dras to examine the Finger. For her part, she began checking it and the area around it for evil, just to be on the safe side.

As he went closer, Dras found the spell seeming to grow turgid in his hands, and then finally "snapping" in some metaphorical way before rebounding on him.
((DM: For the next hour, whenever Dras tries to speak, he ends up quacking. Good thing he has Nonverbal Spell. And Thorn finds her nails growing 14 inches long. Finally, the obelisk is not evil.))

"Quack!" said Dras, surprised. "Quack? Quack!?" He stopped for a moment, and then continued, slowly, "Quack... quack quack. Quack." Realizing that this is unproductive, he strode away from the obelisk, searched his backpack for a sheet of parchment and a vial of ink, and wrote on it:

Vord kept his face carefully blank and his feet away from the obelisk. "Wonderful idea." he said, after reading the piece of paper. "Thorn, can I have one of those as a memento after you cut them off?"

"So, let me know if you need to get anything important said to the others." he continued to Dras in a private Mindlink.

"I wonder... there was a rumor going round about it shoeing any horses that get tethered to it overnight. Maybe it has some other more... reliable powers as well."

"Maybe so," Dras communicated through Vord, "but as far as I know, we don't need our horses shoed, and finding out the set of powers which are reliable seems like an undertaking that would take up a lot of time and effort. Too much of either, in my opinion."

Haldiel didn't laugh at the news at all. "...Wild magic? Gnngh. Yes, I entirely support leaving it be and getting out of here." He'd been glad for the morning practice with Vord, the night before had not been particuarly warm.

Unpocketing his dagger and passing it to Thorn, he asked of Dras "...Are you still able to cast spells, Dras? I ask because if not, we'll have to be more careful as we travel today."

((Sorry about the lack of postage recently, things came up. We can assume Valerie and Haldiel started their discussion of general tactics in a gloss, whilst Haldiel had stood with Vord while watching the investigation of the obelisk... and frankly, he's glad he did so now.))

The attack was sudden, furious, and coordinated. This, the group realized, was the true threat of the winter wolves - hide in the snow and launch a sudden ambush that could wipe out a poorly defended caravan. Four of them attacked at once, spitting cold and biting at the mounts to prevent the travelers escaping, while the other four circled around.

((Cassie, Cassie's pony, Dras, Dras' horse, Thorn's horse are hit by breath weapon for 17 cold damage; Reflex DC 16 half. I'm tracking Cassie and the mounts.
Dras' horse is bitten by Winter Wolf for 19 damage; dies.
Dras fails his Ride check for a soft fall; takes 1 damage from fall.
((Valerie, Valerie's horse, Haldiel, Haldiel's horse are hit by breath weapon for 11 cold damage; Reflex DC 16 half.
Haldiel's horse is bitten by Winter Wolf for 12 damage; is unconscious.
Haldiel succeeds on his Ride check for a soft fall.
Cassie casts Fireball of great justice and both targets fail their saves. ))

"OH NO YOU DON'T!" shouted Cassie, then threw out a spell she had obviously been ready to cast since the beginning of the ride, roasting the two nearest winter wolves into unconscious heaps.

Dras, though managed to hurt himself somewhat in the fall, managed to stay on his feet - facing a winter wolf in bad breath range.

"Reflex": (18)+3 = 21.

Vord stepped to the back of his cart where he would be slightly more safe from breathers, and did his best to look harmless.

Flanking prevention coming up.

Suddenly, without any spellcasting-related movements or glow whatsoever, a wall of flame sprang up to the right of his cart, cutting off the two wolves still standing on that side and singing their fur something wicked.

((Wall of Energy [fire] as close to the two wolves still standing on the right as possible without planting it on them. Gotta give them some incentive not to go through, after all. Base damage 11, Reflex DC 18. The wall is 140 feet long, enough for another ~30 feet on both ends.))

Thorn quickly dismounts her horse so that she is safe from the ice breath, then moves to the left and strikes hard at the wolf.

"TIME TO BURN!" Dras proclaimed, with his right hand executing an arcane gesture, and which burst into flames. He thrust the flaming hand of death right into the wolf's face.

"Touch": (20)+4 = 24.
"Confirm Touch": (1)+4 = 5.
"Fire damage": (1+3+6+4+2) = 16.
Reflex DC 17 or catch on fire.
