Anno: I assume you'll be selling the hulk for scrap? That makes 10k in bounties from the mission, 8k from the planet and 5k in scrap.
Your crew quickly scour the wrecks for use(ful/less) items and prepare to tow the more or less intact one back to the planet. All in all, it takes you about a day to do this and return to the planet where you can drop your things off and plot a course to the next waypoint along your route.
Tarinaky: The Kibalchich quickly grabs the crippled alien vessel and stows it in the mostly empty cargobays, then drops the crews back off at the satelite where they resume their exploration duties. The Perovskaya in the meanwhile makes a micro-jump alongside the Thermopylae, see ILF's post for details.
ILF: You make a micro-jump to the fourth planet in order to investigate and immediately pick up signatures of what would appear to be at least a dozen more of the ships you encountered earlier, though these all seem to be a lot less active then the one you met previously. They appear to be connected to a fusion reactor on the surface, which is itself running in trace mode. Perhaps this was a refueling station of some kind?
Erik: The bar is a fairly rowdy place and you're somewhat surprised that station security hasn't yet set up a permanent checkpoint here, perhaps it's because they don't want to know what's all going on? Either way, there's plenty of shady types walking around this place, humans and aliens alike. You spot one of the suspects sitting at the bar, talking to a couple of people which you suspect are crewmembers aboard one of the many merchant vessels docked to the station. |

MILD VISTAS, DUNCAN
"At this rate, we'll be able to commission a fleet in no time!" Duncan said, looking at the total balance of his account. "We're shipping out. Destination - next patrol waypoint. Give the orders, Janine."
"Aye, sir." _________________

Captain Lance
"Allright, Helm, give us a quick low orbit. Sensors, active pinging the whole way--I'm not taking any more risks until we get repairs. Three orbits--once around the equator, once from pole to pole, and once at an angle. After that, send us back to Station Zero." |

Normatisavan sat down within hearing range of the suspected smuggler and waved a limb to summon an organic waiter rather than using the interface, holding up a data tet of the sort commonly used for rapid transfer of small packets of information. "A standard coffee, something cheap and human-alcoholic, two blends and a vimo-patch." he said, proffering the self-contained information packet to the waiter a few moments later. "Details on there." Normatisavan lowered his voice. "Furthermore, I'm looking for a transport job - have a merchant ship, crew's been in port, and the official listings are boring due to the pile of bidding restrictions. If you facilitate simpler contracts, I might want to hear about it." _________________

Anno: You continue your patrol, which is nice and uneventfull for the remainder of the trip as you head past the second colony and then on back to station Zero, where your money is waiting for you. Start spending that cash already!
ILF: As you enter low orbit, your neutrino detectors pick up a very sharp spike in neutrino emissions. The fusion reactor on the planet is powering up rapidly! Multiple energy signatures on the surface!
Erik: The barkeep looks at you funny for a while, then his brain goes into gear and he figures out what you mean. Or least, thinks he's figured it out. "If ya wanna a job, talk to that bloke over there. Or him." He indicates the suspect and another man, sitting in the back of the bar at a table with 3 other gentlemen. The barkeep then gets to making your drinks for you.
Tarinaky: The Perovskaya picks up multiple high energy signatures on planet IV, along with the powering up of a rather large scale fusion reactor and a few dozen anti-matter reactors. |

MILD VISTAS, DUNCAN
In Mild Vistas' wardroom, a discussion was taking place between three people - Captain Duncan, First Officer Janine and Chief Engineer Enrico. The topic was the exact design of the ship the captain's wish was to commission.
"So what do you propose we kick out, then?" Duncan asked Enrico while Janine was busy looking at some fine detail of the design hologram. It was labelled as the 'Event Horizon', and looked very much alike Mild Vistas did, although there was the notable lack of a particle cannon. "The expanded passive suite?"
"That's madness, cap'n, it is!" protested the engineer. "She'll be goin' blind! N'less you want to install a damn active array instead, I cannae condone it. The sensors stay."
"What, then? You damn well know we can't afford everything, Rick," Duncan countered.
"Do we really need a full hundred of the sixteen inchers?" Janine pointed to the ammunition bay. "They're rather expensive, and we have plenty spares among the specialized munitions."
"Nay, but what if'n we run into a lastin' shootout?"
"Then we use the Vistas' guns, and the Event's secondaries?" Duncan replied before Janine cold work up a rebuttal of her own. The chief engineer didn't seem to like the answer, but couldn't find a decent enough reason to protest that.
"Fine, have it your way, cap'n," he conceded. "Just don't come complainin' to me once you run out of tube feed."
"Right..." Duncan exhaled. "Seventy torpedoes instead of the hundred. I'll give the shipyard the design specifications, then, sometime soon." At that, Janine almost imperceptibly smiled - she would get her own ship, at long last. _________________

Captain Lance
"GET US OUT OF HERE! NOW!" Lance practically yelled at his men--maybe he was panicing, but with the way his ship was, he was taking no chances. |

"I was told - rather bluntly - to talk to you about a job. Normatisavan said, walking over to the suspected smuggler and trying not to let his resignation show. "Do you have anything that needs transporting or shooting, apart from things like badly contained antimatter or this station?" He began waving a clawed limb reflexively in a no-funny-literalism gesture and broke off when he realized that the suspect probably wouldn't understand it. _________________

Anno: Your new starship is quickly assembled, the shipyard crews manage to finish in just 3 days time.
ILF/Tarinaky: The Thermopylae, in low orbit of the planet activates its engines and makes its best attempt at a quick getaway, somewhat hindered by the fact that one of its drives isn't working quite the way it should be. As the Thermopylae approaches minimum safe jump range from the planet, the planet's defenses open up on it. Various energy weapons strike up from the planet's surface and quickly reduce your shields to nothing, then tear a number of gaping holes in the aft section of the ship, disabling your VASIMR drive in the process. Fortunately the Thermopylae managed to gain enough speed to get clear of the planet by then and is able to jump out of firing range.
Erik: The man looks at you rather oddly, then looks over your shoulder at the bar man. "He needs to learn to keep his mouth shut. Anyways, I do sometimes have to arrange transport of items or people that would prefer not to use the official listings. Right now, I've got some people that need a hand getting off the station without attracting attention. Nothing illegal, they just want to keep their rivals from knowing about their travels. If you're interested?"

Captain Lance
"Engineering, get me a damage report and start containment of breaches. Security, get me a casualty report. Helm, limp us back to Station Zero. Sensors, compile all scans and data into one file. I want all the artifacts to be placed in the Ruslan."
Captain Lance's orders echoed throughout his ship as what remained of his crew started to follow his orders, but a malaise had settled over it. Over half the crew was dead, the ship (as loved by much of the crew as a family member) was barely limping, and they didn't even know by what.

DUNCAN
While the ship was completed, Duncan - admiral Duncan now - and Janine were busy staffing it. As per previous design, Janine would be the captain. Alexiei and Enrico were assigned to the Event Horizon as well, along with the Mild Vistas' security chief, Jeremy Harrison. Since there was a shortage of senior officers Duncan trusted well enough, duties were a little stretched. Michael was to take over Janine's duties on the flagship, just as Alexiei had to handle his astrogation as well as the normal responsibilities of first officer on the Event - both tutoring newbies. William was promoted to captain, since the slot was freed. In all, it was a bit of a mess, but at the same time, it was the best they could hope for while the newly promoted junior officers got some experience at their jobs.
Fortunately, the heavily automatized ships did not need much crew - hence Janine and Duncan were free to pick out the most competent people they could lure with the promise of a steady job of a starship. It was also fortunate that wages were agreed to be paid monthly, because commissioning the new vessel had cost Duncan quite a bit. Right now, he needed a new job, in order to rake in some more assets. He wondered what kind of offers were available at the moment. _________________

Normatisavan gestured 'pay attention' with one clawed limb for emphasis and said "I'm interested... in doing business with someone who doesn't jump to conclusions. 'He' suggested another fellow to me. Anyway, I'll wait for the barman to bring my order, now that I've told you what I want. Go back to whatever you were doing." He went back to his own table and sat down. Now I've rattled him, now I'll let him stew. Normatisavan thought. _________________

ILF: Your ship soon arrives at Station Zero, leaking atmosphere from numerous holes and with only its ion thrusters to provide propulsion. A pair of tugs from Station Zero haul your ship into the repair facilities, where your crew manages to contain the most serious damage. Nonetheless, a major overhaul will be needed to make your ship spaceworthy again.
At the same time, the station officials start examining the samples you took from the hangar and your sensor information to determine their worth. Your pay, 45000 credits worth on top of the 10k for a complete system map, is soon transferred to your account.
Your chief engineer and the shipyard officials figure they can restore your ship to its former glory, at least mostly, for around 20000 credits.
Anno: For missions, check page 1. There are currently 5 missions open for applications and until that number goes down a little, there won't be any new listings.
Erik: The man pays no further attention to you and has soon found a couple of others to chat with. They seem to be argueing about something judging from the amount of gestures made. The background noise in the bar and your distance to them makes it impossible to hear exactly what they're talking about though.
After a few minutes of this, one of the men takes out a phone and the others seem to wait for him to finish his call. You also spot a pair of coppers at the entrance of the bar, apparently looking for someone.
Tarinaky: The Perovskaya quickly returns to its position near you, guarding your ship and the artifical satelite. Your troops aboard in the meantime make headway towards where the scientist think the control center might be. On their way there, however, they encounter stiff resistance from an automated security system that was apparently left online. |

DUNCAN, MILD VISTAS
"Prep the Horizon for blast off, Janine, I've signed us up for escort duty," Duncan informed the captain of the Event Horizon, sitting in his newly-installed fleet command chair on the bridge of the Mild Vistas.
"Aye, sir," she nodded, and started giving orders to get her ship moving.
Duncan turned his former Electronics Warfare officer, now captain of the Mild Vistas. "That goes for you, too."
"Aye, sir, already on it," William Skarson confirmed. He was visibly uncomfortable in command, but he was just about the best Duncan could put on the job.

Captain Lance and the Thermopylae
Captain Lance gathered the remains of his crew together in one of the few completely sealed bays of the Thermopylae. "Welcome, crew. I have... news. I'm going to be selling off the Thermopylae for scrap, because it would just cost to much to restore her--and I've got the feeling she'll never attain her former glory again. But using the funds from the mission, and from selling my ship, I plan to purchase a new one--a Thermopylae II, one much more likely to survive in the face of this new enemy. I will pass out pay and recompense, and any of you who wish to retire or seek new jobs may. I'm not going to force you to stay on if you don't want to."

Fleegal Grashlick and the Eclipse
The wormgate opened up, the massive energy expenditure apparently taxing today, as it was an extrmeely short burst. A single medium freighter carrying some form of urgently needed luxury goods, and the tiny ship, so rarely seen from anything like the levels of scrutiny it had just been through.
The chamaeleon stealth skin of the scout ship blended it in with the stars almost instantly, the purple skinned humanoid at its pilot seat opening a securebeam to Sation Zero.
"Fleegal Grashlick, freelancer information specialist reporting." He spoke calmly, a little mechanically, though his skin crawled... He was the loner of space, he was the kind that in previous ages would have gone and colonised the asteroid belt while the rest of his race sat complacent on homeworld. Now he shot for distant stars while the bulk of the empire stayed in the Milky Way, content.
"Roger Grashlick, we have you logged as in system." The voice responding was officious.
"Requesting telemetry data, and mission advisement. Your job board isn't too informative on just how much muscle you want for any of your little endeavours. Can you mark me as available to work with any other captain's that require additional support?" He settled into a holding pattern, somewhat out from Station Zero. He had no intention of docking until supplies were running low, and he'd just stocked up before running the gamut through the wormgate.
"Actually scratch that, I'll take the diplomatic escort mission. Give a 30 minute window for applications to provide additional support." |

Tarinaky: The Kibalchich and the Perovskaya are quickly stowed aboard the artificial satelite, leaving you for the most part blind as to what goes on outside the satelite. After a few more hours your troops and crew have managed to secure control of the satelite's docking facilities and its short range sensor array.
It shows that there are currently 8 vessels docked to the satelite and another 9 are in orbit around the planet. The docked ships appear to have been there for quite a while already and don't appear to be powered up.
Anno: After going through your final checklist, your ships launch and proceed to the rendevous point where you have to wait some time for the diplomat's vessel to arrive. Shortly before it does, another scout vessel arrives, it is named The Eclipse.
ILF: Your old ship is quickly scrapped and a few days later, the Thermopylae II is ready for its maiden voyage.
Confusion: You are told to meet the diplomat, and the other mercenary that signed on for the job, at a rendevous point some distance away from the station. When you arrive there, the Mild Vistas and the Event Horizon are already in position and waiting for the diplomat, which arrives a few minutes after you do.
The diplomat is flying a Corvette, equipped with a souped up deflector shield (matched pair) and a crystalline armour weave, however it is only lightly armed with a set of laser arrays. It's using a VASIMR drive for sublight propulsion.
Erik: The coppers step into the bar and reach for their firearms, yelling for someone to put his hands up. Before you have much of a chance to react, the shooting starts as someone fires at the coppers, which promptly return fire. Hot lead and particle beams are sent flying across the room in several directions. |

DUNCAN, MILD VISTAS
Duncan keyed the comm to the Event. "Hey, Janine. Know anything about our comrades in arms, the Eclipse?" So far, the ride had been smooth. The newbies seemed to be at least partially competent at their jobs, and failed to accidentally blow up either ship.
"Not more than we can see on our sensors, sir," she replied, shaking her head.
"Hrm. I'll be downright neighbourly, then, and call them for some chat." Janine shrugged minimally, in response. "See you," Duncan added and terminated the link. His second-in-command seemed quite a bit more relaxed and satisfied now that she had her own ship to fly in.
"Vinny!" he called over to the communications officer. "Get me a line to the Eclipse."
"Aye, Skipper. Link established, proceed at will."
"Thanks," Duncan nodded, straightened himself out and pressed a few buttons. He would probably find out in a few moments what race their colleague in business was. "This is admiral Gawronsky, commanding officer of the Mild Vistas and the Event Horizon, calling the Eclipse. It looks like we're going to be working together," he began. "In gesture of potential friendship, I ask, 'How's it hanging?'" Duncan did his best smile, and awaited a reply. _________________
