Some of the Canadian boys are playing with pipe design...
I have them working of a set of WTF's for my race bike.
(Walms, Tripletriplenut, Fatties) Very Happy



First one is now welded up.. Shocked Shocked Shocked

Nice looking pipes , too bad they couldnt hydro form the down pipe to avoid the " lobster back " in that first taper section .

i was thinking of hydro forming the header pipe once i am satisfied the the pipes are doing what is expected of them. would dramaticly cut down on welding time.i already have the equipment to do it.

I have a later (mid-late 90's) TZ-125 pipe which has 40 or so individual pieces welded. I always thought it is a "piece of art"!

Having tested the same spec pipes, one set with lobster back bends and one set with press formed bends we got no difference in horsepower from either set. It is also interesting to note that many of the last GP 500,s had fully fabricated pipes and I am sure if they had thought there was an advantage to smooth front bends thay would have made them that way. After all they had the budgets to make whatever they thought would give them any advantage over their rivals.
As someone who makes pipes and fully fabricates them I think the main advantage of pressure formed bends is more for the ease of fabrication than any difference in power. I recently repaired two sets of kit pipes for a tz 250 V twin, both made here in the uk and both highly recomended, and it was interesting to note that one set had pressure formed front bends whilst the other set were fully fabricated.
At the last crmc round here in the uk where there were four different winners in the four tz 350 races ( shows how competative the class is with over 30 riders on the grid on tz yamaha,s ) 3 out of the four winners were using my pipes (fully fabricated front bends) which in my book says they work pretty good to me.

Its hard to beat the facts :~) i guess the hype on smooth designed chambers is more of a selling feature than real world need . Thanx for the feedback on your design as i am also going to be needing custom chambers soon for a 2 stroke triple project and knowing now that smooth bend on the first cone isnt really all that critical .. Thanks for the input Rob! That's good info to know.
Is it true to say sound waves react different than gases and fluids to changes in direction?
I read somewhere it's more important to focus on a perfectly round cross section. What I mean by that is a dent can be more harmful that what it appears. Does this make sense?
